Born in Lisbon in 1972, Miguel Gomes is a Portuguese film director known for his innovative approach to cinema. A graduate of the Lisbon Theatre and Film School, he began his career as a film critic before transitioning to filmmaking. His early short films, such as Entretanto (1999), Inventário de Natal (2000), 31 (2001), Kalkitos (2002), Cântico das Criaturas (2006), and Redemption (2013), garnered recognition and awards from international festivals. Gomes' first feature film, A Cara que Mereces (2004), marked the beginning of his rise in international cinema. His subsequent films—Our Beloved Month of August (2008, Cannes Directors’ Fortnight), Tabu (2012, Berlinale Official Competition: Alfred Bauer and FIPRESCI prizes), The Thousand and One Nights (2015, a three-part film, Cannes Directors’ Fortnight), and Otsoga Diaries (2021, Cannes Directors' Fortnight)—cemented his reputation. His work blends documentary and fiction, drawing on popular imagery to create a distinctive cinematic style. Gomes' sixth feature film, Grand Tour, premiered in the 2024 Cannes Film Festival Competition, where he won the prestigious Best Director Award. Retrospectives of his films have been held in Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Greece, and the United States. In 2016, he received a Career Award at the Laceno d'Oro Film Festival in Italy.
