In a Portugal mired in crisis, a director, unable to find meaning in his work, cowardly retreats and leaves the beautiful Scheherazade to take over. Each night, Scheherazade tells the King unfinished stories, promising to continue them the next evening, thereby defying his vow to execute his new wives after their wedding night. In this first volume, Scheherazade describes the country’s unrest: “It has reached me, O auspicious King, that in a sorrowful land, where people dream of mermaids and whales, unemployment spreads…” And as morning arrives, Scheherazade falls silent.
