Nuri Bilge Ceylan Retrospective

07.11.2023

Nuri Bilge Ceylan will present the film About Dry Grasses and the film The Wild Pear Tree, on November 18th, at Cine-Teatro Turim.

In this retrospective we can understand how the Turkish filmmaker expresses his point of view without fear, seeking to portray reality as it is. As he said in an interview “I try to create meaning of this puzzle that is human nature, combined with the panorama in which we have to survive". Loneliness is one of the most determining factors in the work of the director, seeking to portray the human condition, comparing it with the emptiness of the universe. Ceylan is influenced by directors such as: Tarkovsky, Bergman, Angelopoulous and Antonioni and also on a literary level, Anton Chekhov, author of the famous works The Seagull and The Cherry Orchard.

Distant, one of his works on display, tells the story of a couple who distance themselves, both from each other and from themselves, consumed by the passing of the days in the big city. He won the best director award at Cannes with his film Three Monkeys and dedicated to his “beautiful and lonely country”. Winter Sleep seeks to awake the viewer from their hibernation and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The Wild Pear Tree tells the story of a man who returned home to save money to publish his first novel and seeks to restore his difficult relationship with his father. In addition to these, we will also show Climates, The Small Town, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia and Clouds of May, the latter three presented by Denis Ruzaev, director, curator, programmer and film critic.
