Aydin, a retired actor, runs a small hotel in Central Anatolia with his wife Nihal, from whom he has become emotionally estranged, and his sister Necla, who is still recovering from her recent divorce. Inspired by Anton Tchecov's short story The Wife and Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, the film was the great winner at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 and is considered to be director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's great masterpiece. As Jorge Leitão Ramos wrote at the time of its release, "Winter Sleep comes from a cinema of the word and of moral values that was thought to have disappeared long ago. A cinema like that of Dreyer or Rohmer in Moral Tales, or Bergman in his 'chamber cinema', in which the characters were almost extracted from a historical time and a geographical place to become archetypes for a theoretical discussion in which their lives were implicated and we were forced to take a stand."
