"In his diaries, Kafka reflects on the difficulty of fully enjoying music, remarking, ‘here and there I notice an effect, and how seldom it is musical.’ There are, however, many important elements in his meticulous observation and humour that contradict him.
It is from this contradiction that I have crafted this recital, featuring extracts from Kafka’s diaries, short stories, or excerpts from them, letters, and a few scattered poems. Alongside these readings, we will hear works by Kurtág, Petr Eben, Brahms, Max Brod, Krenek, Bizet, Ligeti and Wagner. Notably, the works by Eben, Brod, and Krenek are being premiered in Portugal.
It’s always stimulating being able to ‘contradict’ a genius."
