As part of the cycle ‘Exiles’, a special film concert will take place at Teatro do Bairro, featuring a screening of two of Charlie Chaplin’s films, The Immigrant and The Pilgrim, in digitally restored copies, accompanied by live music by Rodrigo Amado, Hernâni Faustino and Rodrigo Pinheiro
The Immigrant, with its elements of satire, romance, and poetry, remains to this day a comic masterpiece. Chaplin drew inspiration from his own experience of emigrating to the United States, seeking humour in the hardships he faced. The Immigrant was one of the films that moved Chaplin the most.
The Pilgrim, Chaplin’s last film before devoting himself entirely to feature-length works, is one of his most overlooked pieces, yet also one of his sharpest, offering a clever satire of rural life and the role of religion.
