On the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões, master of the sonnet in Portuguese, a central figure in classical literature and a symbol of Portuguese culture, we are celebrating the poet with readings of his poetry, spoken and recited by young students from the Liceu Camões and by actors, set to music or the subject of musical compositions by JP Simões and Carlos Maria Trindade. We will also be showing a restoration from the Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema of Camões (1946), by Leitão de Barros, followed by a debate.
This tribute begins on November 13, at Teatro do Bairro, at 10pm, with a reading of the poem Vinde Cá Meu Tão Certo Secretário [Canção X], by Eurico Lopes and Manuela Couto, with a musical moment by JP Simões.
The following day (November 14), at 3pm, in a debate with guests to be announced, we will screen the film Camões, by Leitão de Barros, about the adventurous life of the greatest writer of the Portuguese language. The troubled love affairs, the financial problems and the inglorious decline of a complex personality. This was, at the time, the biggest film production in Portugal, a kind of national artistic project, which brought together resources like never before and a team of great actors, including António Vilar in the role of the vate, and Eunice Muñoz.
At around 9pm, in the Camões High School Auditorium, there will be a musical performance by Carlos Maria Trindade, who will accompany the reading of the author's poems by students from the Camões High School.
Luís de Camões' influence transcends borders; the poet produced a vast quantity of sonnets and lyrical poetry that deal with universal themes such as love, longing and the human condition. His unique ability to combine erudition and sensitivity is immortalized in the 18th edition of LEFFEST.
