A film about the adventurous life of the greatest writer in the Portuguese language, Luís Vaz de Camões. The troubled loves, the financial problems and the inglorious decline of a complex personality. This was, at the time, the biggest film production in Portugal, a kind of national artistic endeavour, which brought together resources like never before and a team of great actors, including António Vilar in the role of the vate, and Eunice Muñoz. There was much speculation as to whether the film immortalised the regime more than the poet, or the regime under the pretext of the poet. Seen today, almost 80 years later, what is the place of this Camões by Leitão de Barros, who made a film as relevant as Maria do Mar sixteen years earlier?
