Conversation between Alexandra Lucas Coelho and Nida Ibrahim

  • Masterclasses and debates

War journalism has long been a crucial component in reporting global conflicts. Today, with instant access to information from thousands of kilometres away, the role of journalists remains as important as ever. In fact, in a world where anyone can document, journalism plays an even more vital role in providing reliable news reports as the result of thorough investigation and dedication. This mission is increasingly challenged by censorship imposed by oppressive political regimes.

In 2024, journalist and writer Alexandra Lucas Coelho profiled Nida Ibrahim for Público, highlighting the precarious situation in the Gaza Strip. Nida Ibrahim is a Palestinian journalist working for Al Jazeera, whose Ramallah studios were forcibly shut down by Israeli soldiers. She is a key figure in reporting on events in Palestine, committed to raising awareness and fighting against the censorship imposed by Israeli forces.

As part of LEFFEST’24, a conversation will take place between Alexandra Lucas Coelho and Nida Ibrahim — two journalists who, throughout their careers, have worked to portray the brutal realities of war.

Under the section "Images of War, War of Images", the discussion will focus on how social media and new content platforms have transformed the media representation of war, influencing collective perceptions of violence, activism, and politics. It will also explore the gap between those who experience these events firsthand and those who witness them from a distance. Additionally, the conversation will consider more constructive ways of using these communication channels, whether as journalists, activists, or consumers, with a special emphasis on the ongoing situation in Palestine, where journalists fight daily to give voice to a silenced population.

The conversation will take place on 12th November at 7:30pm, at Teatro do Bairro.
