Letters from the Ancestors – Forgotten Sighs on the Screen

Pedra Sozinha Não Sustém Panela is one of the short films that make up the series Presente Angolano: Tempo Mumuíla, filmed by Ruy Duarte Carvalho in 1979, the film is a portrait of the Mumuíla people, in the south of Angola. We follow a confrontation between two views of the world: that of Jau's elders and that of the students at the Faculty of Arts of Lubango. Accompanying this film, we present O Kimbanda Kambia by the same director, which means Healer or Shaman or “one who communicates with the beyond” and portrays two encounters with a traditional healer, one about his practice, which includes the treatment of phenomena such as spirit possession and sorcery and a conversation with the psychiatrist, Africano Neto, about the limitations of these practices - Sunday 19, 4:30 pm, Cinema Medeia Nimas.

Ouvertures by The Living and The Dead Ensemble – in Haiti a group of young actors translates and rehearses scenes by Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian revolution for Independence, who would die after his exile in Jura. As the play progresses, the actors become possessed by their characters and, eventually, Louverture's ghost joins the group and takes them on a journey towards a new form of exile - Saturday, November 11, 7:30 pm, Cine-Teatro Turim. With the presence of Sophonie Maignan and Léonard Jean-Baptiste, members of the Living and the Dead Ensemble.

A Japanese Village by Shinsuke Ogawa is a documentary portrait of the personal and collective stories of a village that seeks to survive the trauma of war and the rural exodus of younger generations. The film includes old tales heard from the villager´s ancestors, and reflections on the transformations caused by the country's modernization - Saturday 18, 2pm, Cine-Teatro Turim.
