Paz Alicia Garciadiego was born in 1949 in Mexico City. She studied philosophy, literature, and Latin American studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Shortly thereafter, she began working at the Secretariat of Public Education, where she adapted literary classics and episodes from Mexican history into comics, and also wrote educational programs for the Educational and Cultural Television Unit. There, she met filmmaker Arturo Ripstein, with whom she collaborated on The Realm of Fortune (1986), written with Juan Rulfo and directed by Ripstein. This was the first of many collaborations between the couple, with Garciadiego writing the script and Ripstein directing. In 1996, Deep Crimson premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay. In 2000, for The Ruination of Men she won the Best Screenplay Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival. Other notable works include The Queen of the Night (1994), Divine (1998), No One Writes to the Colonel (1999), and Such is life (2000). In 2019, she was recognized with the Golden Ariel Award for her career, becoming the first female screenwriter to receive this award.
Alicia Garciadiego accompanies Arturo Ripstein in this year's LEFFEST tribute to him.
