Fabrice du Welz was born in Belgium, in 1972. He studied at the Dramatic Arts Conservatory in Liège, and later on at the INSAS, in Brussels. He worked in television and short films until 2004, the year in which he directed his first feature film, Calvaire, which premiered at La Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival. Three years later, Vinyan was selected for the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Alleluia (2014) marked his third presence at this festival, this time at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes. In 2016, Message From the King premiered in the Vanguard Section of the Toronto Film Festival. His most recent film, Maldoror, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, out of competition. A cult filmmaker, considered a genre specialist, his thrillers and horror films are characterized by a vision of human relationships as places of violence and danger, anchored in a realist psychological cosmos.
