Krystian Lupa is a renowned Polish director and playwright. In 2017, he began his engagement with Kafka through the staging of Proces (The Trial). A full-length play, running for about four and a half hours, it is based on Kafka's novel of the same name, along with excerpts from his correspondence and diaries. The play premiered on 15th November 2017 at the Warsaw Theatre and has since been performed at festivals in France, Austria, China, Russia, and Greece. Reflecting on the urgency and relevance of the project, Lupa stated: "Faced with this crisis of European values and the threat posed to individual freedom, we want this performance to be a collective voice for the future."
Lupa, who previously attended LEFFEST in 2016, will join us again at LEFFEST’24. As part of this programme, he will present a long filmed excerpt, personally selected, from Proces. Following the screening, Lupa will lead a discussion on how his initial vision evolved into the final production. He will provide insights into the research and staging process, the challenges he faced, and how these experiences deepened his relationship with Kafka’s world.
