"He who remains awake chases away absence / and massages the muscles of eternity," wrote Mahmoud Darwish, the most acclaimed Arab poet of the past half-century and a national symbol, whomwe honor through a documentary by Simone Bitton and readings of his poems. We will also discover the poetry of Edward Said, voiced by his wife, Mariam Said. Contemporary Palestinian poetry "is exiled, waiting for a return or a free verse," as Shahd Wadi writes in the preface to the anthology Se eu tiver de morrer – Poesia de Resistência Palestina – séc. XXI, Traça Edições. Yet these poets remain awake and "can even defeat death," renewing themselves and a country, and a people, in absence. Letus celebrate them and read their poems, accompanied by live music.
