The 10th Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival presents a selection of four films by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet whose raw material is Music, in particular the music of Bach and Schoenberg.

In Straub-Huillet’s filmography, which so consciously reflects on the essence of cinema, on what its matter is made up of – a shot, the space, a sound, the body of an actor – music “is a voice or a layer of matter that we want to direct.” (Straub dixit) It is the summoning and the confrontation between these multiple materials that his works are made of, leaving music and text (true acts of resistance, much like his films) to express themselves as if they had never been read or listened to.
