An adaptation of Arnold Schoenberg’s unfinished biblical opera. Straub and Huillet remain faithful to their principles  by using direct sound and by choosing singers instead of dubbed actors, carrying the task of creating “images that don’t block the spectator’s imagination” (Jean-Marie Straub). Schoenberg never composed music for the third act, and the film keeps that unfinished character. In a single shot, Moses recites a monologue, with no music, based on the composer’s notes.
