Carmo Afonso

Carmo Afonso is a lawyer, screenwriter and columnist for Público since 2022. Born in 1973, in the Algarve, she moved to Lisbon at the age of 17 and graduated in Law from the Portuguese Catholic University. She has been practising law independently for more than 20 years, working in defense of public causes related to the environment, historical and cultural heritage, democracy and progressive causes. In 2019, she made her debut in the cinema industry through her collaboration with Rita Nunes on the screenplay for the film Linhas Tortas, which was nominated for the Best Screenplay award in the 2020 editions of the Autores Awards and Fantastic Awards. Her columns are famous for their political nature and focus on current social issues.
