Director, screenwriter, producer

Sol de Carvalho was born in 1953 in Mozambique. In 1973, he joined the National Conservatory in Lisbon to study cinema, completing his first year before returning to Mozambique in 1974. There, he organised film festivals and wrote film criticism. Between 1980 and 1984, he was the director of Kuxakanema, a weekly newsreel produced entirely in Mozambique. From 1986 onwards, he dedicated himself fully to cinema, developing projects as a screenwriter, director, and producer. He was one of the founding members of Ébano Multimédia, one of Mozambique’s most prestigious production companies. In 1993, he founded Promarte, where he remains a founding partner to this day. He has directed films such as A Herança da Viúva (2000) and O Jardim do Outro Homem (2006). In 2018, Mabata Bata, based on the tale “The Day Mabata Bata Exploded” by fellow Mozambican Mia Couto, was shown at the IndieLisboa Film Festival and the Rotterdam Film Festival. His most recent film, O Ancoradouro do Tempo (2023), is based on another work by Mia Couto, Under the Frangipani.
