Juan Mora Catlett

Filmmaker, Film Professor

Juan Mora Catlett (b. 1949) is a Mexican filmmaker and film educator. He studied at the Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and has worked in fiction and documentary filmmaking since 1975, alongside a longstanding career in film education. Over the decades, he has taught at the CUEC of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC), helping to train several generations of filmmakers. The interplay between cinema, historical memory and Indigenous cultures is a defining feature of his work. His first feature film, Retorno a Aztlán (1990), was the first Mexican feature film spoken entirely in Nahuatl and received the Special Jury Grand Prize at the Trieste Latin American Film Festival. With Eréndira la indomable (2006), filmed with Purépecha, he continued his exploration of Indigenous cultural heritage, earning awards and distinctions at international festivals. In 2007, he received recognition from Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Education for his contribution to promoting Indigenous languages through mass media.
