João R. Figueiredo began his academic journey at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL), where he graduated in Portuguese Studies, in 1995. Later, he defended his master's thesis, "The Self-Complacency of Mimesis. A Defense of Poetry, Os Lusíadas and Vida de D. Frei Bertolameu dos Mártires”, in 1999. Building on his studies of Camões and literary theory, he went on to complete his doctoral thesis, "Conceptual Arts. Camões and Rubens", in 2006. He currently teaches Portuguese Literature, Visual Culture, Italian Culture, and Literary Theory at FLUL. He is the author of several essays on Camões. In 2020, he co-edited, with António M. Feijó and Miguel Tamen, the book “O Cânone", a volume that gathers essays on around fifty Portuguese authors, from Fernão Lopes to Luiza Neto Jorge. His interests include aesthetics, art history, Italian studies, and Renaissance literature.
