Born in Madrid in 1974, Javier Lafuente co-founded the production company Los ilusos films with Jonás Trueba. This venture emerged from their experience of self-producing The Wishful Thinkers (2013), a project filmed over several months in the spare time of friends, without external funding or public financial support, and distributed independently both within Spain and internationally. Since then, Lafuente has produced Trueba’s films, including The Romantic Exiles (2015), The Reconquest (2016), The August Virgin (2019), Who’s Stopping Us (2021), You Have to Come and See It (2022), and most recently, The Other Way Around (2024), which premiered at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Label Europa Cinemas Prize. Lafuente also produced Itsaso Arana’s debut feature, The Girls Are Alright. Arana, a frequent lead in Trueba’s films, is also a member of Los ilusos films.
