Frieder Schlaich is a German producer, writer and director. He studied visual communication at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and, in 1987, together with Irene von Alberti, founded the video shop Filmgalerie 451, which became a film production and distribution company in 1992, through which they also produce their own films. He made his first film, Paul Bowles: Half Moon, in 1995 and has since made other films, such as Otomo (1999), Weil ich schöner bin (2012) and Naomis Reise (2017), which together form a trilogy about migration and racism in Germany. His films have been recognised internationally at various film festivals and in his work as a producer he has collaborated with directors such as Christoph Schlingensief, Werner Schroeter and Heinz Emigholz.
