Filmmaker, video artist

Avi Mograbi is an Israeli filmmaker and video artist. Born in 1956 in Tel Aviv, he studied philosophy at Tel Aviv University and art at the HaMidrasha School of Art. He began his career as an assistant director on various national and international films and adverts, directing his first feature film, The Reconstruction, in 1994. Since then, his work has primarily consisted of politically charged documentaries focused on raising awareness and advocating for social, cultural, and political justice in the Middle East. In 2004, he co-founded the Israeli non-governmental organisation Breaking the Silence, which collects confidential testimonies from current and former Israeli soldiers about their experiences in the occupied Palestinian territories, aiming to educate the Israeli public about the realities of war. Alongside his filmmaking, he has taught experimental and documentary cinema at Tel Aviv University and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design since 1999.
