Not only the first film produced by Studio Misr, Egypt’s first major film production company, but also the feature that marked the acting debut of the acclaimed Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum. Based on a tale inspired by “One Thousand and One Nights”, by Omar Khayyam, Wedad combines musical elements and romance. The result is a story set in the time of the Mamluk Sultanate, about a wealthy trader named Baher who, amidst a financial crisis, is forced to sell his slave, Wedad, with whom he is madly in love.
