In a drunken act of rebellion, brothers Roland and Gérard decide to burn down the family farm. Unbeknownst to them, a homeless man had taken refuge there and perishes in the fire. Roland takes the blame and is imprisoned. Ten years later, he is released and finds that Gérard has rebuilt the farm, where he now lives with his wife Annie and their daughter. The simmering tension between the brothers, with Annie caught in the middle, drives this drama, where the oppressive influence of the rural environment on human nature is ever-present.
