Nominated for seven Academy Awards, The Thin Red Line marks the second film adaptation of James Jones' homonymous book and Terrence Malick's return to directing after a 20-year break. The plot focuses on the Battle of Guadalcanal that took place during the Second World War, but instead of creating a conventional war film, Terrence Malick makes use of the voice-over (a technique already characteristic of his films) to illustrate the characters' inner conflict and create an introspective atmosphere. At the same time, the brutality of war is juxtaposed with the serenity of nature, producing a visual meditation on the fragility and resilience of life.
