Ingrid (Julianne Moore) is a successful writer, famous for her fear of death. When she discovers that her long-time friend Martha (Tilda Swinton), a former war correspondent, is ill, she decides to visit her. The fragility of Martha's life creates a tender bond of friendship and complicity between the two women, in a film that is a real feast for the eyes and celebrates the magic of life while we have the privilege of living it. Almodóvar's first film in English, The Room Next Door earned him the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Pedro Almodóvar

Pedro Almodóvar, often considered the most celebrated Spanish filmmaker since Buñuel, was born in 1949. At 17, he moved to Madrid to attend the National Film School, but it had been closed by Franco’s regime. With few other options, he bought a Super-8 camera and began making short films between 1972 and 1978. During this time, he also performed with the independent theatre group Los Goliardos, contributed to underground magazines, wrote short stories, and was part of a parody punk band called Almodóvar and McNamara.

His early successes came during La Movida, a cultural movement that followed Franco’s dictatorship. In 1987, he and his brother Agustín founded the film production company El Deseo. As a director, screenwriter, and producer, Almodóvar has created an impressive body of work, with notable films like Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), Bad Education (2004), The Skin I Live In (2011), Pain and Glory (2019), Parallel Mothers (2021) and his most recent film, The Room Next Door (2024), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

He is one of the most awarded filmmakers of his time, with honours including two Oscars for All About My Mother (1999) and Talk to Her (2002), two Golden Globes, a Golden Lion, two Cannes awards, and six Goya Awards. He has also received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Castilla-La Mancha (1999), Harvard (2009), and Oxford (2016).
