Rudolf Noelte’s The Castle is notoriously the first film adaptation of Frank Kafka’s homonymous work. Simultaneously, it marks the first and only film by the director, whose career was largely dedicated to his work in television, theater and opera. Although it was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1968, Noelte's film did not compete due to the cancellation of the festival in consequence of the student protests that took place in France in May of that year. Nevertheless, Rudolf Noelte’s film stands out for its pessimistic nature and grotesque visuals, which perfectly highlight the Kafkaesque surrealism.
