In Indonesia, former members of the death squads responsible for the 1965–66 massacres are invited to reenact their crimes in whatever cinematic genres they choose. Anwar Congo and his companions stage the killings as gangster films, westerns and musicals, turning violence into spectacle. The reenactment becomes a device through which memory, fantasy and representation begin to blur.
