Story of O

O, a young and free-spirited photographer, is taken by her boyfriend René to a château in Roissy, where she is grouped with other women. Masked men strip her, torture her, and repeatedly rape her. O subjects herself to this horrific treatment out of love for her boyfriend. After some time, René offers her to his half-brother Stephen, who brands her and forces her to participate in sadomasochistic sexual acts. This controversial film, which tested the boundaries of its time, is an exploration of submission and masochism that questions what love can endure. It is based on Pauline Réage’s homonymous book.

Just Jaeckin

Just Jaeckin was born in France in 1940 and died in 2022. His career began in the 1960s as a photographer. He is best known for his collaborations with several magazines, including Elle, Vogue, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as with icons like Jane Fonda, Brigitte Bardot, and Catherine Deneuve. The spirit of the 1960s, in which, according to his own words, “one could do anything; you just had to have ideas and energy,” shaped the eclecticism that characterises his oeuvre. Besides being a photographer, he was also a sculptor and director. Between 1966 and 1972, he exhibited his sculptures regularly at the Stadler Gallery in Paris. In 1972, he directed his first feature film, Emmanuelle, an erotic film that had a significant impact on French society due to its representation of a hedonistic lifestyle, becoming one of the most-watched films that year. The film garnered worldwide renown. In the following years, he continued to direct feature films, such as Story of O (1975), Madame Claude (1977), and The Last Romantic Lover (1978), all with a strong erotic charge, but none achieved the critical and commercial success of his debut. He directed his last film in 1984 and dedicated himself to sculpture in the following decades.
