Considered Stanley Kubrick's first major commercial success, Paths of Glory was inspired by Humphrey Cobb’s homonymous book, which in turn was based on the military shootings that took place within the French army during the First World War, as a demonstration of the consequences of insubordination. Kubrick displays the power hierarchies reinforced in the military world in this story of a colonel who defends three of his soldiers when they are blamed for the failure of a suicide attack, ordered by their general, and, consequently, sentenced to death during the trial. The film was subjected to censorship in several countries, the most relevant being France, due to the way the French army was portrayed and France’s involvement in the Algerian War, which culminated in the film being banned in the country for 18 years.
