Paolo Sorrentino

Paolo Sorrentino was born in Naples, Italy, in 1970. He is a writer, screenwriter, and director known for This Must Be the Place (2011), The Great Beauty (2013), and Youth (2015). In 2014, The Great Beauty won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as a BAFTA and five European Film Awards. Other notable works include The Consequences of Love (2004), The Family Friend (2006), and the series The Young Pope (2016), starring Jude Law. His unique cinematic style, characterised by non-naturalistic narratives, kinetic images and a satirical streak, makes him one of the most prominent Italian filmmakers working today. The visually stunning and complex dramas, a successful cross between extravagance and elegant humour, and the construction of characters with immense emotional depth have led to frequent comparisons with Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni.
