War epic directed by Frenchman Arthur Harari, Onoda, 10,000 Nights in the Jungle is inspired by the true story of Hiroo Onoda (1922-2014), a Japanese intelligence officer in the Japanese Imperial Army who fought in the Philippines during World War II and who spent nearly 30 years in the jungles of Lubang Island after the conflict ended, never convinced that the war was over. He was the penultimate Japanese soldier to be discharged, in March 1974. Arthur Harari builds a respectable war epic about a character who can be seen from many angles (or as a multifaceted and contradictory figure), who was a hero and a resistant who refused to submit to Western invaders for some, and to others a raving madman who killed innocents while waging an imaginary holy war.
