During Thatcher’s ruling, My Beautiful Laundrette details the Asian community in South London which, at the time, was encouraged to value wealth and trust a system of meritocracy. When Omar, a young Pakistani man, is hired to work at his uncle Nasser’s laundrette, he asks his boyfriend Johnny – who isn’t accepted by Omar’s community – to help him. A cultural and subversive comedy tackling issues of racism, marginalization and homophobia within their political context.
