Mémoires de Palestine

Leïla Shahid, former representative of the Palestinian Authority in France and Europe and a key voice in the defense of Palestine, shares memories of the life of her mother, Sirine Husseini Shahid, born in Jerusalem in 1920, through the book she wrote, Memories of Jerusalem. The story of her family, involved in the Palestinian national movement, is intertwined with the collective history, past and present, of the Palestinian people. Through the voice of the ambassador and archival footage, Serge Le Péron creates a dialogue between temporalities, looking at history to question the fate of a people and a territory.

Serge le Péron

Serge Le Péron was born in Paris in 1948. He studied at the Vincennes faculty at the height of the post-May '68 upheavals, when he founded the Cinélutte group, a collective that made militant films about strikes and conflicts in factories. In 1975, he co-directed L'Olivier, a documentary about Palestine, with two university friends, Jean Narboni and Danièle Dubroux. A longtime professor at the Université Paris-VIII-Vincennes-Saint-Denis, he was also a columnist and editor for Cahiers du Cinéma, writing mainly on the relationship between cinema and political issues. His tenure at Cahiers lasted about a decade, during which he worked with filmmakers such as Olivier Assayas and Hervé Le Roux. In 1984, Serge Le Péron made his first feature film, Laisse Béton, a tender portrait of a group of teenagers living a hellish life in the Paris suburbs. After an unfinished American film project, he began making documentaries and reports for television (notably for the TV magazine Cinéma, cinémas). In 2000, he returned to fiction with a novel he had been putting off: L'Affaire Marcorelle, named after a guilt-ridden investigating magistrate played by Jean-Pierre Léaud.
