Demy's first feature and his absolute masterpiece, now presented in a new restored digital copy. Beautiful and elegant, it pays tribute to Lola-Lola and to Dietrich in The Blue Angel. Demy's joy in filmmaking translates into the viewer's pleasure in watching.

This screening is also a tribute to Anouk Aimée, who passed away this year—an artist we loved and continue to cherish.

Jacques Demy

Inspired by classic Hollywood musicals and the particularities of the Nouvelle Vague, Jacques Demy developed a directorial style that was distinct from his contemporaries. He became famous for his films full of bright colours, in which the characters suddenly broke into song, as in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), and crossed over inside the universe of his filmography, in Lola (1961) and Model Shop (1969). While his Nouvelle Vague companions devoted themselves to a realistic, critical and, at times, immensely political style, Jacques Demy created fantastic worlds characterised by their poetic imagination, evoking feelings of nostalgia and childhood innocence throughout his film career.
