Julie lives in her room, in a self-imposed enclosure, following a breakup. We see her tidying her space and writing letters. Eventually, she decides to leave her room and hitchhikes with a lorry driver. During the journey, she listens to him talk about his relationships with women. The two part ways when Julie arrives at her destination—her ex-girlfriend’s house. In Akerman’s first feature film, in which she also stars, we witness a vulnerable exploration of alienation and the search for connection, directed in a minimalist style yet with remarkable emotional and psychological precision.
