Director Audrey Diwan says that eroticism in cinema is above all captured by the frame and the tension between what is seen and what is not seen. This new interpretation, or a ‘modern-day vision’ of Emmanuelle Arsan's famous novel - which fifty years ago gave rise to one of the most cult erotic films and made actress Sylvia Kristel one of the cinematic symbols of sexual liberation in the 1970s -, is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. Diwan dedicated three years to this film following her Golden Lion win at the Venice Film Festival for her previous work, Happening.

Audrey Diwan

Audrey Diwan is a French film-maker, writer and screenwriter of Lebanese origin. Before taking her first steps into filmmaking, Diwan worked as a journalist and screenwriter. She is a member of Collectif 50/50, a French NGO that promotes equality between men and women in the film industry. After Losing It (2019), her debut film starring Céline Sallette and Pio Marmai, her second feature, Happening (2021) was selected for the Official Competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion. Adapted from the autobiographical novel by French writer, Annie Ernaux, the film deals with the legalisation of abortion in France in the 60s. Her collaborations include those with Valérie Donzelli, Cédric Jimenez and Gilles Lellouche. Her most recent film, Emmanuelle, was selected for the Official Competition at the San Sebastián Film Festival and will be premiered in Portugal at LEFFEST'24.
