Adapted from Franz Kafka's unfinished novel Amerika, this film portrays a young German bourgeois in the individualist and capitalist America of the 1930s. The Straubs have - and we quote Alain Bergala in Cahiers:
"a simple way of showing the world, with its violent lies and quixotic optimism. With an absolute faith in literalness and the same horror of metaphor, everything in the shots of their films, as in Kafka's writing, displays the space of their attention, as if they were grasping the world at every moment. A landmark in the history of film".
