Carnival is Over

Regina and Valério are a happy couple living in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Love offers Valério a means of escape from his family's criminal business. The unexpected death of his father, Rio de Janeiro's most powerful crime leader, throws the couple into a dilemma: on one hand, they don't want to be dragged into the world of crime by taking over the business left by Valerio's father, on the other, Regina and Valerio are indebted and are burdened by expenses they cannot pay. A dark and gripping neo-noir film, Os Enforcados marks Coimbra's return to the Toronto International Film Festival, showing the darker side of Brazil's criminal underworld.

Fernando Coimbra

Fernando Coimbra is a Brazilian director with a degree in Film and Video from the University of São Paulo. His career began with short films, including Trópico das Cabras (2007), A Garrafa do Diabo (2009) and Magnífica Desolação(2010), which toured dozens of Brazilian and international festivals. In 2013, he made his first feature film, The Wolf Behind the Door, which won the Horizontes Latinos Best Film award at the San Sebastián Film Festival and the Audience Award and Best Actress for Leandra Leal at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival. The attention resulting from the film's success earned him the directorship, alongside José Padilha, of two episodes of the famous Netflix series Narcos (2015). Coimbra was invited for another production, by the American streaming giant, to direct Sand Castle (2017). In the same year, Coimbra was honoured at the Sundance Film Festival with the Global Filmmaking Award for the screenplay of Carnival is Over. The film, completed in 2024, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in the Special Presentations section.
