Caniba

In 1981, Issei Sagawa murdered and cannibalized a fellow student in Paris. Years later, filmmaking anthropologists Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor encounter him in Tokyo, where he lives under the care of his brother Jun. Through extreme close-ups of their faces and bodies, Caniba juxtaposes the horror of Sagawa’s crime with the intimacy of the brothers’ relationship, destabilizing the boundaries between care and violence.
