Betty Blue

Zorg, a resigned writer, meets the fiery Betty, who, after reading his manuscripts, considers him a genius. The two become embroiled in an intense and hedonistic love affair that drives them away from conventional society. Betty becomes increasingly erratic, exhibiting violent outbursts as she attempts to publish Zorg’s texts. He strives to protect her sanity and their fragile existence. This vibrant and expressionistic film portrays an all-consuming love while offering a damning critique of the male gaze, which disregards feminine identity to sustain fantasies of romantic and sexual objectification.

Jean-Jacques Beineix

Jean-Jacques Beineix was born in 1946 in France. His career began in television, and in 1972 he served as assistant director on Jerry Lewis’s The Day the Clown Cried, an unfinished and unreleased film. He directed his first feature film, Diva, in 1981, which won four César Awards, including Best First Work and Best Cinematography. It is regarded as one of the first films in the "cinéma du look" movement, characterised by highly stylised imagery with intense colours and lighting. Léos Carax and Luc Besson are notable directors associated with this movement. His second film, La lune dans le caniveau (1983), premiered in the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Three years later, he directed his most popular film, 37°2 le matin, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. In the following decades, he primarily directed documentaries, which did not receive the same level of attention as his earlier works, despite their expressionistic style and representations of sex and violence. He passed away in Paris in 2022.
