Alsino and the Condor

One of the films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1983, Alsino and the Condor confronts childhood innocence with wartime disaster. During the Nicaraguan Revolution, young Alsino lives with his grandmother in a remote area and spends his days lost in childhood fantasies and dreams. At the centre of the civil conflict between the Sandinista National Liberation Front and government troops, the fine line between Alsino's imagination and reality emphasises the desire for freedom and a better future.

Miguel Littín

Miguel Littín was born in 1942, in Chile, and is a producer, director and writer. He studied theatre at the University of Santiago. In 1969, after working in television, he directed his first feature film El chacal de Nahueltoro, about the marginalization of the lower class and considered one of the most important Chilean films. It was nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1971. In that same year, Salvador Allende made him director of the agency destined to regulate the country’s film activity. After the military coup in 1973, Littín was forced to leave Chile and continued his work in exile. In Mexico, he directed Letters from Marusia (1975), nominated for the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. In 1982, in Nicaragua, he directed Alsino and the Condor, also nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. With the end of Pinochet’s dictatorship in 1990, he returned to Chile, where he settled permanently. In 2016, he became director of the Institute of Advanced Audiovisual Studies at the University of O'Higgins. He is a founding member of the New Latin American Cinema Foundation and has published several novels.
