Chow Mo Wan is writing a sci-fi novel about a train heading to a place called 2046 where passengers can recapture their lost memories and from which nobody has yet returned. Fuelled by the inspiration gathered in his erotic adventures with several women at the Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong, the lines between fiction and reality slowly begin to blur. Through a trail of concealed connections, 2046 works as an informal sequel to the story of In the Mood for Love (2000). In his mastery of non-linear narrativity, the auteur brings to life a web of interconnected faces, some drenched in sorrow, others in love, and envelops them in his signature aesthetic of richly textured shadows and contrasting shades of colour.
