Yoshio Kitagawa studied film at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he completed postgraduate studies before embarking on his career as an assistant cinematographer on feature films. He has since worked as a cinematographer across fiction and documentary, as well as in art projects, music videos and commercials. His work features a long-standing collaboration with director Ryusûke Hamaguchi — Happy Hour (2015), Evil Does Not Exist (2023) — and in recent years, he has increasingly extended it to international productions. He was also part of the camera crew for the epic 13 Assassins (2010), directed by Takashi Miike.
