Sophie Letourneur

Filmmaker, Actress

Sophie Letourneur is a French filmmaker and actress whose work blends humour, intimacy and formal experimentation. After studying at the École Duperré and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, she directed the short film La tête dans le vide, in 2004. Her early mid-length films, Manue bolonaise and Roc et canyon, led to her first feature, Chicks (2009), a critically acclaimed film presented at the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival. In 2011, she presented The Shady Sailor at Locarno Film Festival, where she also shot Les coquillettes, which screened there in 2012. She subsequently directed Gaby Baby Doll (2014) and Enormous (2019) — the latter earning her the Prix Jean Vigo in 2020. With Travel in Italy (2023), Letourneur began a trilogy exploring couples, travel and intimacy. L’Aventura, the second instalment, continues this exploration with her characteristic blend of fiction, autobiography and improvisation.
