Choreographer and Dancer

Rui Horta is a choreographer and dancer, born in Lisbon. He started dancing in the ballet courses of Ballet Gulbenkian and later lived in New York, where he completed his training. In the 1980s, he became one of the most important drivers of a new generation of Portuguese dancers and choreographers. He later lived in Germany, where he directed the Soap Dance Theater Frankfurt. In 2000, he returned to Portugal and founded Espaço do Tempo, a multidisciplinary center for artistic experimentation. His work has been presented in the most important theatres and festivals in the world, such as the Thêatre de la Ville in Paris, which co-produced his work for over a decade. As a guest artist, he created a vast repertoire for companies such as the Ballet Gulbenkian, the Grand Ballet de l'Opera de Genéve and the Netherlands Dance Theater. He received several awards and distinctions and was awarded the degree of Officer of the Order of Prince Henry and the degree of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. His work as a director extends to theatre, opera and experimental music, as he is also a light designer and multimedia researcher, a universe he frequently uses in his works.
