Mike Leigh (b. 1943, Salford, England) is one of Britain's most renowned filmmakers. He began his career as a stage director and playwright; it was in the theater that he perfected the talent and mastery that distinguish his approach to directing actors, collaborating with them to craft complex, genuinely human characters. His work, whose aesthetics and sensibility have been compared to those of Yasujiro Ozu, focuses on ordinary people, their struggles and determination. A recipient of awards from several of the most prestigious international film festivals, Leigh won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival with his very first feature, Bleak Moments (1971). He went on to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1996 for Secrets & Lies, the Golden Lion at Venice in 2004 for Vera Drake, and, more recently, his latest work, Tender Loving Care, received the Golden Shell for Best Film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It is this film that Mike Leigh will discuss with the audience, via Zoom, at the 20th edition of LEFFEST, following a retrospective of his work held by the festival in 2018.
