Maine Jesus is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist from Bahia, currently based in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Her practice brings together painting, culture and gastronomy as spaces for the creation of meaning, memory and belonging. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she explores Black joy as a political and aesthetic gesture, challenging narratives historically shaped by erasure and stigmatisation. Her work depicts Black communities in moments of pleasure, affection, harmony, elegance and intellectual engagement, proposing alternative forms of representation that move beyond perspectives centred on pain and resistance. In her artistic practice, joy emerges as an artistic language, a form of resistance and an affirmation of life.
