Filmmaker, Screenwriter and Producer

Born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1967, Cristi Puiu is a director, screenwriter and producer renowned for his anthropological approach to cinema. He is best known for titles such as The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005), winner of the Best Film Award in the Un Certain Régard section at the Cannes Film Festival, Aurora (2010), which premiered in the same section at the Cannes Film Festival and was part of the Estoril Film Festival Competition, Sieranevada (2016), selected for the official competition at Cannes, and Malmkrog (2020), which won the Encounters Award for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival. His latest film, MMXX (2023), was presented at the San Sebastián Film Festival. Rich in literary and philosophical references, Cristi Puiu's work is characterised by a constant reflection on morality and a liberating confrontation with the boundaries of cinematic savoir-faire, as well as the human condition itself.
